Port Macquarie Accountancy Firms Busy in Preparation for Federal Government Rebates

Monday March 9, 2009

Port Macquarie accountancy firms and tax consultants have been loaded with work in preparation for the federal government tax rebates.

The Port Macquarie offices of companies such as The Income Tax Professionals (ITP) and H&R Block are dealing with many enquiries from locals who are about to receive their handouts.

The first round of Nation Building and Jobs Plan handouts are due to be deployed this week. Families who receive Centrelink payments will also receive more money this week.

"We're two or three times busier than usual," ITP tax consultant Karen Burt said. 'People are trying to find out whether and how they will receive the federal government's rebate.

"There are lots of people coming out of the woodwork who haven't done tax returns for the 2007/08 financial year."

Mrs Burt said that this meant there was a lot more research and work to do to meet people's requests.

The Port Macquarie Grigg and Bligh-Jones office is another firm that has had an increase in clients needing assistance in preparation for the rebate.

"The hard part of dealing with these is the delay through the two houses to get the stimulus package ratified," said chartered accountant Richard Bligh-Jones. "It has taken quite a while for the federal government to work things out with the coalition."
